Better field documentation, craft-friendly product design, and fiber technician training do more for the workforce than kudos

I love to spend Labor Day with my family on our back deck while food sizzles on the grill. I can't say it's very original, but it provides a reliable physical and mental break from a busy schedule.
Over this most recent long weekend, though, I started thinking about the meaning of the holiday. Labor Day celebrates the people who make the world around us function. When things break down, they rush to help — even on holidays.
The fiber industry says a lot of nice things about fiber technicians around Labor Day. We offer a “thank you” and pat on the back, then move on. But these men and women deserve more. They make fiber technologies work no matter the conditions, whether climbing a pole, squeezing into a manhole, or withstanding weather that would send the rest of us indoors.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is blunt about it. Telecommunications equipment installers and line installers have high rates of injuries and illnesses due to the intense work environment. They climb ladders, poles, and towers. They squeeze into cramped spaces and perform heavy lifting. Crews do their jobs in snow, wind, rain, and extreme heat and cold. After a storm, they may work long hours for days in a row.
Now add the demand curve. The Fiber Broadband Association estimates the industry will need 180,000 additional fiber technicians over the next decade. We are asking more people to do a hard job, faster, with less experience on the crew.
Applause doesn’t help with that. Better engineering and better training do.

Fiber technology has changed dramatically over the past decade. Documentation mostly hasn’t.

Training that builds careers in fiber optics
Good tools only go so far without skills. Clearfield offers CFOT® training accredited by the Fiber Optic Association, covering fiber technology, real-world applications, and hands-on splicing, connectorization, and testing. For customers and contractors going deeper on our platform, Clearfield College runs a certified product training program with a path from apprentice to field master and digital credentials at every level.
Certification matters because it changes what a job can become. A technician with credentials has leverage, mobility, and a reason to stay in this industry. We have a big enough task to recruit more people to the field without having to deal with a constant churn of experienced pros leaving the industry.
Of course, none of this makes the weather better or the pole any shorter. But it does mean technicians spend less of the day fighting with the equipment and more of it finishing the work. And we believe that's the type of appreciation that everyone can truly appreciate.
