Broadband, wireless, and enterprise networks are consolidating fast, and modular fiber infrastructure enables operators to scale across all of them

In customer meetings over the past year, I’ve noticed the questions getting broader. An operator will open with something familiar — cost per passing, crew productivity, how quickly a neighborhood can be turned up. But within a few minutes we’re talking about the tower that covers the ridge above town, the enterprise campus they just won, or the edge application moving compute closer to their subscribers. 

None of that feels like separate businesses to them. They describe one network with different endpoints, and they’re right to. The categories our industry has relied on for years are collapsing into each other.  

Operators aren’t picking a lane. They are becoming connectivity providers in the fullest sense of the term.

From broadband provider to connectivity provider 

The market is moving quickly on this, and it’s moving from both directions at once. Wireless carriers are buying fiber companies outright or taking equity positions in them, because owning the wireline path costs less over time than leasing it forever. Regional ISPs are selling their fiber businesses to Tier 1 providers hungry for footprint. Cable operators sell mobile service. Wireline operators are standing up wireless assets of their own. Almost nobody is starting from the same place, and yet the destination looks remarkably similar. 

The same logic applies at community scale, where the economics can be even more compelling. When a single home sits across a river or halfway up a ridge, the cost per passing gets difficult to justify. A fixed wireless link from a nearby tower can serve that subscriber this year rather than three years from now. That isn’t a retreat from fiber. The tower still needs backhaul, and it still needs power. What changes is the shape of the final connection. 

Funding programs have accelerated the shift. Providers who never intended to operate wireless assets are now building fixed wireless into their plans, because leaving hard-to-reach households unserved isn’t an acceptable outcome. And satellite competitors are glad to fill any gap that stays open. Seen that way, convergence is a response to reality. 

The next infrastructure challenge is execution 

Demand isn’t the constraint anymore. Execution is. An operator expanding from FTTH into small cells, fixed wireless, or enterprise services runs into a set of practical questions that have nothing to do with market opportunity: 

  • Do my crews need new training for every environment?
  • How many SKUs and vendors am I managing now? 
  • Can my teams reuse the installation methods they already know? 
  • Will the equipment I buy today still fit the network I'm building in three years? 

Convergence either works or stalls on those answers. Modular design handles most of them.  

When products share a common architecture, a technician who can terminate fiber in an outdoor cabinet can do the same work in a data hall. That consistency compounds. Every deployment gets a little faster, and the learning curve flattens for the next crew and the next environment.  

It’s also why we invest as much as we do in training and certification. Workforce capability is infrastructure, too.
