Acoustic Sensing Cables

Distributed Acoustic Sensing for Critical Infrastructure

Clearfield Acoustic Sensing Cables are designed to support Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) applications where fiber is used as a continuous sensing path along critical infrastructure, secured boundaries, and remote assets. The portfolio includes non-metallic, dielectric armored, and steel armored constructions so customers can select the appropriate balance of acoustic sensitivity, mechanical protection, weight, and environmental resistance for the installation.

When paired with a compatible DAS interrogator and analytics platform, these cables can support monitoring designs for vibration, movement, physical disturbance, and acoustic activity along the cable route.

Product Details

Data Centers and Digital Infrastructure
Acoustic sensing cable can support data center campuses and digital infrastructure environments where operators want greater visibility across exterior assets and physical infrastructure routes.

Energy and Utilities
Support monitoring designs along pipelines, substations, electrical corridors, renewable-energy sites, and remote utility infrastructure.

Transportation and Civil Infrastructure
Deploy along rail corridors, tunnels, bridges, roadways, and underground utility routes where vibration and activity awareness are important.

Defense and Security
Support perimeter, border, port, remote-site, and critical-facility monitoring designs.

Industrial and Harsh Environments
Create sensing paths along processing facilities, terminals, storage sites, mining operations, and industrial infrastructure.

Smart Cities and Municipal Infrastructure
Support monitoring of public infrastructure, utility corridors, secured facilities, and distributed assets across a municipal network.

Features & Benefits

Integrity

  • Designed for Distributed Acoustic Sensing applications using Rayleigh-scattering sensing technology.
  • Acoustic-sensitive cable designs support continuous monitoring along the installed fiber route.
  • Bend-insensitive optical fibers help preserve routing flexibility while supporting sensing performance.
  • Dielectric and steel armored variants are also available in hybrid DAS/DTS configurations using Rayleigh- and Raman-based sensing methods.

Protection

  • Three construction options allow the cable to be matched to the physical demands of the installation.
  • Non-metallic cable combines a PUR outer sheath with aramid strain relief for flexible, lightweight deployment.
  • Dielectric armored cable uses FRP reinforcement and a PA outer sheath for non-metallic mechanical protection.
  • Steel armored cable combines 316L stainless-steel armoring, Fiber-in-Metal-Tube construction, and a PA outer sheath for demanding harsh-environment applications.
  • Available designs support outdoor, direct-buried, conduit, and structure-attached installations; armored variants can also support subsea deployments.

Access

  • Compact, flexible cable designs support routing through constrained pathways and complex infrastructure routes.
  • Minimum bend radius ranges from 10x to 20x cable diameter depending on cable construction and whether tensile load is present.
  • Standard cable marking with meter marks is available, along with special outer-sheath labeling.
  • Customization options include loops, fan-outs, connectors, mounting brackets, anchors, and custom fiber types.

Investment

  • Three construction types help customers select the right protection level without overengineering the installation.
  • Non-metallic cable provides a lightweight option for applications that do not require metallic or FRP armoring.
  • Dielectric armored cable provides high tensile and crush resistance at low weight for applications requiring a non-metallic construction.
  • Steel armored cable provides the highest physical protection for demanding routes exposed to mechanical, chemical, or environmental risk.
  • All product families are tested in accordance with IEC 60794-1-2.
