Fiber Optic Cabinets, Cables, Pedestals and Terminals

Car phone with carrying case and antenna.

Those of us that have been around for a while remember something called a “Bag Phone”.  It was a large cell phone that required an exterior battery and you needed a bag to carry it around.  These were some of the first portable cell phones available on the market.  For our younger readers, I have included a picture in case you do not believe that this actually existed.

Did it work?  Sure it did.  But it quickly became antiquated when smaller, pocket sized phones were developed.   Then came the “Flip phone” and this finally morphed into our current smart phones.  We have come a long way.

A coworker and I were having dinner the other night and he mentioned that using large ¾” or 1 inch conduit for the last mile of a FTTx deployment instead of microduct, is like using a bag phone when they could be using a smart phone. Microduct is smaller, easier to transport to the job site and install.  It also adds features like quick restoration and the ability to pull small signature cables into it.
